Swimming?

When I was young, swimming was awesome. I remember splashing around in the pool and playing Marco Polo and other awesome games. So, when I thought about swimming for a triathlon, I was really excited. I thought that would be the funnest part. But I was wrong, oh, so wrong.

I got a free 7-day pass to Gold's Gym, which is Gold's Gym-ese for "Give us your information so we can call you weekly until you buy an over-priced package," to use the pool. They have a 3 lane lap pool that I tried out today. It was AWFUL (and I am not one to use all caps lightly). I literally took about 4 strokes and almost died. Swimming is so much harder than I remember! I don't know how Michael Phelps does it. After getting out of the pool, though, the gym was great. I got to ride a stationary bike then run on a treadmill. It was nice to watch the NBA Finals while I ran. However, I still prefer working out outside. Doing it all inside on a stationary bike and a treadmill is really, really boring. It felt good to do all three workouts in a row, though.

I decided a strategy with the Gold's "trainer" (Gold's Gym-ese for meathead salesman) is to give them a price that I am willing to pay for a year and see if they take it or come close enough. I can even use Kasey as an excuse (you know, "Well, I would love to do it...but, my wife...").

I think I will win.

  1. Sorry I'm learning about this on your post before talking to you in person, but I was having girl's night, as you know, and now you are sweetly asleep. Anyway, I am sorry to hear that swimming is awful. It'll get better, right? And way to go actually doing all three activities in a row. Your triathlon should be a piece of cake! I love you. I'll see you in about one minute, but you won't see me since your eyes are closed. I love you.

  2. We tried that with the gold's gym guy and just ended up being mad. You have to be careful because they will SAY anything to get you there and talking and then change their mind on PAPER. Good luck-I hope you are successful!

  3. Swimming is hard! I admire you for your dedication to training for all three sports. I can barely manage the time for running!

Garrett, I believe the Marco Polo games you are referring to happened in my backyard! Great memories.

Don't ever give Gold's Gym your bank account information. Tell them you will pay monthly in cash. I once had a membership, cancelled it after it had expired (after a couple of years or whatever). I filled out all the paperwork (which was very tedious), and I was GIVEN A LETTER from Gold's Gym that said my membership was cancelled. Well, I noticed a couple of months later that they were still deducting membership fees from my bank account. You would not believe the month-long hassle it took before it was finally cancelled, and I was refunded for the months I was fraudulently charged for.

Michele, are you Meedy again? I hope so!
